We often say that stainless steel parts need to be polished, why should stainless steel be polished? The technology of stainless steel polishing includes mechanical polishing, chemical polishing, electrolytic polishing, ultrasonic polishing, fluid polishing, and magnetic polishing.

1. Mechanical polishing
Mechanical polishing is by cutting, material surface plastic deformation to remove the polished convex part and get a smooth surface polishing method, generally using oil stone strips, wool wheels, sandpaper, etc., manual operation-based, special parts such as the surface of the rotary body, can use turntable and other auxiliary tools, surface quality requirements can be used super refined polishing method. Super precision polishing is the use of special abrasive, in the abrasive-containing research projection, tightly pressed on the surface of the workpiece to be machined, for high-speed rotation movement. The surface roughness of Ra0.008um can be achieved by using this technology, which is the highest among various polishing methods. This method is often used for optical lens molds.
2. Chemical polishing
Chemical polishing is to preferentially dissolve the concave part of the microscopic convex part of the surface of the material in the chemical medium, so as to obtain a smooth surface. The main advantage of this method is that there is no need for complex equipment, it can polish workpieces with complex shapes, and many workpieces can be polished at the same time, with high efficiency. The core problem of chemical polishing is the preparation of polishing liquid. The surface roughness obtained by chemical polishing is generally 10um.
3. Electrolytic polishing
The basic principle of electrolytic polishing is the same as chemical polishing, that is, the surface is smoothed by selectively dissolving tiny protruding parts of the surface of the material. Compared with chemical polishing, the influence of cathodic reaction can be eliminated, and the effect is better. The electrochemical polishing process is divided into two steps:
(1) The macroscopic leveling dissolved product diffuses into the electrolyte, and the surface geometry of the material is rough and decreases, and the Ra>1um is reduced.
(2) Low light flat anodic polarization, surface brightness increased, Ra<1um.
4. Ultrasonic polishing

The workpiece is put into the abrasive suspension and placed together in the ultrasonic field, relying on the oscillation action of ultrasonic waves to grind and polish the abrasive on the surface of the workpiece. Ultrasonic processing has a small macroscopic force and will not cause workpiece deformation, but tooling production and installation are more difficult. Ultrasonic processing can be combined with chemical or electrochemical methods. On the basis of solution corrosion and electrolysis, ultrasonic vibration stirring solution is applied to detach the dissolved products on the surface of the workpiece, and the corrosion or electrolyte near the surface is uniform; The cavitation of ultrasonic waves in liquids can also inhibit the corrosion process and facilitate surface brightening.

5. Fluid polishing


Fluid polishing relies on high-speed flowing liquid and its abrasive particles to wash the surface of the workpiece to achieve the purpose of polishing. Common methods are: abrasive injection processing, liquid jet processing, hydrodynamic grinding, etc. Hydrodynamic grinding is hydraulically driven, so that the liquid medium carrying the abrasive particles reciprocates over the surface of the workpiece at high speed. The medium is mainly made of special compounds (polymer-like substances) that flow through well at lower pressure and is mixed with abrasives, and the abrasives can use silicon carbide powder.
6. Magnetic grinding and polishing
Magnetic grinding and polishing is the use of magnetic abrasives to form an abrasive brush under the action of magnetic field to grind the workpiece. This method has high processing efficiency, good quality, easy control of processing conditions, and good working conditions. With suitable abrasives, the surface roughness can reach Ra0.1um.
The polishing said in plastic mold processing is very different from the surface polishing required in other industries, strictly speaking, the polishing of the mold should be called mirror processing. It not only places high demands on the polishing itself, but also has high standards for surface flatness, smoothness and geometric accuracy. Surface polishing generally requires only a shiny surface. The standard of mirror processing is divided into four levels: AO=Ra0.008L m, A1=Ra0.016um, A3=Ra0.032um, A4=Ra0.063um, because electrolytic polishing, fluid polishing and other methods are difficult to accurately control the geometric accuracy of parts, and the surface quality of chemical polishing, ultrasonic polishing, magnetic grinding and polishing and other methods does not meet the requirements, so the mirror processing of precision molds is still based on mechanical polishing.
